Indented

Blind Deboss

A blind deboss creates a pressed-in imprint with no added colour, so the design appears through depth and shadow rather than foil or ink.

LOOK + FEEL

Soft, understated, and refined. The imprint sits indented into the cover, creating a quiet sense of depth that becomes more visible as light moves across the surface.

MATERIAL NOTES

This finish works best on smooth, firm materials for a crisp, legible imprint. Natural Linen and Baltic Linen are not recommended, as heavy texture can soften detail. For clearer linen results, choose Foil Deboss; for a flat option, choose Foil Kiss.

Best used for: names, dates, monograms, minimal logos.

Indented + Metallic

Foil Deboss

Foil deboss combines a pressed-in impression with metallic foil, creating a classic finish that catches the light while still feeling indented and refined.

LOOK + FEEL

Elegant and elevated, with metallic contrast. The foil sits within the indentation, so it feels dimensional and polished without looking overly bold.

MATERIAL NOTES

Foil deboss performs best on smooth, firm materials that allow clean foil adhesion. French Velvet and Suede are not compatible, as foil doesn’t adhere evenly to these textures. For colour on these materials, choose Foil Kiss; for a no-colour option, choose Blind Deboss.

Best used for: names, dates, monograms, understated logos.

Flat + Smooth

Digital Print

This finish is flat and smooth, with foil colour printed digitally onto the cover surface. It’s ideal for designs that need clarity and precision, such as logos or custom artwork.

LOOK + FEEL

Crisp, bright, and highly visible. Because it sits on the surface rather than being pressed in, the finish looks clean and modern with sharp edges and strong contrast.

MATERIAL NOTES

Foil Kiss works best on smooth, stable materials and is not compatible with genuine leather, rustic leather, full grain leather, buckram, or eco leather. It is also not recommended on dark Sakura Cotton shades (Umber, Slate Grey). If you want colour on these materials, Foil Deboss is the recommended alternative.

Best used for: logos, artwork, high-contrast designs, fine detail.

Natural Etched Look

Laser Engraving

Laser engraving creates a lightly etched imprint that reveals the material beneath the surface. The result is natural, subtle, and unique to each cover material.

LOOK + FEEL

Organic and material-forward. The design appears through a gentle etched contrast rather than foil colour, giving a modern, understated finish with character.

MATERIAL NOTES

This option works best on materials that can be cleanly etched and show natural contrast when engraved. Because results vary depending on material colour and texture, slight variation is part of the aesthetic of this finish.

Best used for: minimal logos, clean typography, natural and modern styles.

answer

No. Each finish interacts differently with material texture, thickness, and surface coating. Some materials require specific finishes to achieve clean, durable results.

Highly textured, soft, or coated materials may prevent foil from adhering evenly or reduce the clarity of an indented imprint. Compatibility ensures the imprint looks refined and lasts over time.

We recommend choosing an alternative finish that achieves a similar visual effect while working better with your selected material. Material notes throughout the page highlight these options.

Not always. The same finish can appear slightly different depending on material colour, texture, and structure. This is especially true for blind debossing and laser engraving.

Neither. Foil Kiss is flat and smooth, with the foil applied digitally to the surface rather than pressed into the material.

Flat + Smooth finishes, such as Foil Kiss, are best for designs that require sharp edges and fine detail. Custom Design is recommended for complex artwork.

In most cases, a single finish is used for consistency. If you’re considering multiple finishes, we recommend reviewing material compatibility or reaching out for guidance.

Handset is best for simple text such as names and dates. Calligraphy suits script-style names with movement and character. Custom Design allows for logos and detailed artwork.
